Winter 2012 Snowshoe Hikes
In the tradition of community wide snowshoe hikes that were popular in New England in the 1920s, Hoffmaster State Park is hosting snowshoe outings for families each Saturday at 11am this winter starting January 14, 2012. The hikes are suitable for children 7 years old on up accompanied by an adult. Snowshoes for these programs may be reserved from the Gillette Nature Association for a $5 fee per pair. Snowshoes must be reserved in advance and paid for when your hike reservation is made.
Reservations may be made by calling 231-798-3573.
"Snowshoe hikes are an excellent way to get exercise in the out-of-doors and enjoy the peace and solitude of winter in the park," says Park Naturalist Elizabeth Tillman. The park's snow covered sand dunes are the setting for all the snowshoe hikes. "Most hike routes include some climbing but all take a slow relaxed pace. In my experience, most people including children enjoy the challenging terrain and exercise."
Snowshoe hikes begin at the Gillette Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required for all participants, including participants with their own snowshoes. To give everyone an opportunity to participate we have a limit of two hike reservations per person.
A Recreation Park passport is required for entry into the state park
Six or more inches of snow is needed for snowshoeing at Hoffmaster State Park.
